Basic Sea Survival
This one day course is held at several locations along the South coast,
and conforms to the codes of practice for the commercial fishing
industry and small commercial vessels.
Cost: £160.00
Elementary First Aid
This one day course is available throughout the region. This is a
mandatory requirement for all commercial fishermen and those
operating under the various codes of practice.
Cost: £120.00
Basic Firefighting
This one day course is not STCW certifiied, but is an essential one day
course required for all commercial fishermen and those charter
operators wishing to gain basic boatmaster certification.
Cost: £125.00
This one day course was introduced in 2005 and is mandatory for all
new entrants to the commercial fishing industry. The course covers basic
seamanship and vessel knowledge, along with extensive information on
accident prevention.

Introduction to
Commercial Fishing
Course
The Seafish Introduction to
Commercial Fishing Course lasts
15 days and is run at our
Fishermens College at Lyme
Regis. The course is completely
free and is aimed at new
entrants joining the commercial
fishing industry in order to give
them an comprehensive insight
into seamanship, life at sea and
the fishing industry in order to
prepare them for work at sea in a
dangerous industry. Topics
include netmending, basic
engineering, navigation and
seamanship, and the course
includes all 4 of the basic
mandatory safety courses.

Safety Awareness & Management
This one day course is mandatory for all experienced commercial
fishermen and covers onboard management and risk assessment
practices.
Cost: £120.00
This is a 10 hour course, plus exam which we run over one and a half
days. The first day covers all the topics required for the course, with
practical sessions in the afternoon, followed by further practical sessions
and exam the following morning, usually completing by lunchtime.
Cost: £120 per day plus £60 exam fee payable to the RYA. Free for
eligible commercial fishermen.
Short Range Radio (RYA)
Referesher Training is
FREE
For all commercial fishermen
who have completed basic safety
training. Certificates must be
three years old to qualify.
Skipper Training is
FREE
For all commercial fishermen
who have completed basic safety
training. The Short Range Radio
course, Intermediate Stabilty
course, Engine and Bridge
Watchkeeping courses are all
supplied free of charge for those
wishing to qualify for the Seafish
Under 16.5m Skipper Certificate.
Note: The short range radio
course requires a £60 fee for the
exam, payable to the RYA.

Skipper Courses for Under 16.5m Skipper Certificate
Bridge Watchkeeping
Engine Watchkeeping
Stability Awareness
All of these courses are required in order to qualify for the
Seafish Under 16.5m Skipper Certificate.
Bridge Watchkeeping and Engine Watchkeeping courses are
available in either 2 day or 4 day format, and equate to the
requirement for issue of the Restricted or Unrestricted
Certificate respectively.
